PhD Position in Laser SpectroscopyETH Zurich is seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join the Laboratory for Functional Ferroic Materials. The candidate will explore novel manifestations of ferroic order using advanced nonlinear laser spectroscopy techniques, working with class-IV laser systems and other state-of-the-art equipment. Location- Master’s degree in Physics or Materials Physics
- Hands-on experience with class-IV lasers and related techniques
- Basic education in condensed matter physics
- Strong problem-solving skills and a deep curiosity about fundamental physical phenomena
- High motivation, self-organization, creativity, and the ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary setting
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts to non-specialists
The PhD project aims to advance the fundamental understanding of ferroic order and explore novel types of ferroic domains, such as multiferroicity, altermagnetism, and hidden states. Candidates will:
- Design and set up nonlinear-optical experiments using pulsed laser systems
- Perform spatially resolved imaging and manipulation of domains in various ferroic materials
- Troubleshoot and maintain laser setups and conduct experiments in cryogenic environments
- Engage with other experimental techniques and theoretical discussions
- Work in an interdisciplinary team environment and communicate findings effectively
