Job Description:

Your responsibilities

Are you passionate about electromagnetism, high-voltage or power electronics? Do you thrive on pushing the limits, switching kiloamperes and kilovolts in nanoseconds? Does the prospect of working on the world's largest accelerator project excite you? If so, it's time to explore the world of pulsed power at CERN In the Systems Department (SY), the Accelerator Beam Transfer Group (ABT) is in charge of the design, development, construction and exploitation of beam transfer related equipment.

Within the ABT group, the Pulsed Power Engineering Section (PPE) is a small and specialized team responsible for the fast pulsed beam transfer systems across the CERN accelerator complex. These systems comprise high voltage/current pulse generators, impedance matched transmission lines and low inductance electro-magnets. The PPE team is now seeking a motivated graduate to strengthen its R&D efforts in the field of fast pulsed systems for the Future Circular Collider (FCC) project.

The successful candidate will:

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop fast-pulsed systems for the FCC-ee project.
  • Simulate electromagnetic circuits and components and optimize critical parameters.
  • Study the impedance matching of stripline systems.
  • Contribute to the development of pulse generator topologies together with CERN experts, from design to prototyping.
  • Prepare test setups and early prototypes to benchmark simulations in the laboratory. Work in the laboratory hands-on (measuring, building setups).
  • Document simulation and measurement results, publish scientific aspects.

Your profile

Skills

  • Background in electrical engineering, power electronics or similar
  • Experience with electromagnetic simulation tools and analogue circuit simulations
  • Experience with electrical measurement equipment (oscilloscope, RCL meter, etc.)
  • Ability to document simulation and test results accurately
  • Motivation to work in a multidisciplinary and international environment.
  • Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • You have a professional background in Electrical engineering (or a related field) and have either:
    • a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
    • or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

Additional Information

Job closing date: 12th February 2025 at 23:59 PM (midnight) CET.

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

Working hours: 40 hours per week

Target start date: 01-April-2025

This position involves:

  • Exposure to ionizing radiation and classified as category A.
  • Operations on electrical installations or in their vicinity (over 1000 Volt AC or 1500 Volt DC) requiring a specific authorization.
  • Exposure to electromagnetic fields under certain exposure conditions.

Given the occupational health risks associated with this position, the selected candidate must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed.

What we offer

  • A monthly stipend ranging between 6287 and 6911 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax).
  • Coverage by CERN's comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund.
  • Depending on your individual circumstances: installation grant; family, child and infant allowances; payment of travel expenses at the beginning and end of contract.
  • 30 days of paid leave per year.
  • On-the-job and formal training at CERN as well as in-house language courses for English and/or French.

About us

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
