SummaryLeads cross-functional team of subject matter experts in due diligence (DD) phase of external partnering evaluations. Accountable to ensure robust, fair balance, and timely scientific / technical DD evaluations and to develop an integrated DD team recommendation. Acts as Key partner for Corporate & Business Development (C&BD) in generating the overall deal recommendation. Location: Basel, Switzerland
About the Role
  • Drives a comprehensive investigation and analysis process, in close collaboration with other C&BD functions and Novartis Organizational Units, to evaluate and assess external business opportunities;
  • Accountable for the scientific / technical DD evaluation in close partnership with S&E Lead / BD&L Lead / M&A Lead. Lead / accountable for developing an integrated, cross-functional risk management plan. Lead / accountable for reporting and communication of scientific / technical DD findings to senior management. Ensures fair balance and accuracy.
  • Responsible for operational excellence in the set up and conduct of diligences (adherence to C&BD process, data review, interactions with external partner, etc.)
  • Key partner to C&BD functions and leadership for overall deal making recommendations. Co-ordinates and chairs DD team review, discussions, and team recommendation
  • Ensures the correct handling of confidential information and compliance with confidential disclosure obligations
  • Leads the elaboration of comprehensive, accurate and aligned development plans and costs. Ensures the appropriate integration of considerations for feasibility, uncertainties, and competitive challenges in the market, including appropriate scenario generation and contingency planning
  • Contributes to establish an overall development budget in collaboration with Biomedical Research (BR)/Development Finance, ensuring development cost assumptions are complete, accurate and reasonable. Co-ordinates in collaboration with Strategy & Growth and Commercial functions the Target Product Profile (TPP) and ensures TPP is in line with DD findings.
  • Understands financial valuation (NPV) and challenges development-related assumptions. As member of deal team, contributes to the preparation / review of non-binding bids, term sheets, and contracts, by ensuring major DD findings and risk inflection points are appropriately considered
  • Drives team recommendation based on integrated view on the BD&L opportunity with fair balance of opportunities and risks, and with solution focused outlook. Accountable to present DD findings to the Executive Committee Novartis (ECN). Ensuring professional and positive interactions with the external partner.

What you will bring to the role:

  • Bachelor's degree required. Doctoral or equivalent degree preferably in life science combined with business management training or experience.
  • Extensive drug development expertise, with significant experience in pharma drug development spanning across several disciplines and stages (from research to commercial). Proven contribution to business development and due diligence; extensive experience an advantage
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, ability to integrate across functions and organizations to build collaborative relationships.
  • Advanced planning and tracking skills with attention to detail including experience with project management and tools. Well-organized, excellent time management with respect to priorities and self-management
  • Excellent communication skills and used to report to senior executive management. Experienced of leading and motivating cross-functional teams
  • Fast action taker, ability to quickly grasp the essence of new projects. Involves the right team members in the right situation at the right time. Sound judgement of which risks and issues need to be highlighted and properly communicated to (senior) management.
  • Proficiency in English required, written & oral.
