Your responsibilities
You will join a team of engineers to work on the design and construction of the CMS High Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL) detectors (one for each end of CMS). Fully assembled each detector weighs around 220 tons and reaches a diameter of up to 5 m. The whole structure, made of a combination of stainless steel, copper, lead, silicon and scintillator along with all the cabling and services, is kept at -35C with a sophisticated CO2-based cooling system.
Your activities will be during a crucial phase of the detector development, with its installation in the CMS experiment foreseen in 2027. You will be involved in several engineering activities for the final design, production/procurement, testing and installation of the HGCAL.
In particular you will:
- Perform structural and thermal calculations (using Ansys)
- Design mechanical pieces (normally using Catia)
- Setup and perform tests to validate technical choices
- Write technical specifications; -setup tenders and follow-up industrial contracts.
You will also take part in the final detector assembly and installation.

About us
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on
Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization. Employing a diverse workforce is central to our success.
