USI invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in temporality in psychoanalysis.

Research topic and scientific environment
While the specific topic of the thesis is still open, and has to be agreed with the main
supervisor, Prof. Boas Erez, and approved by the relevant Faculty committees, it will
address the relevance of temporality in the practice of and the theoretical writings in
psychoanalysis.

Depending on the topic chosen, the candidate shall be enrolled in the Ph.D. programme in
philosophy or the Ph.D. programme in communication sciences / argumentation. This will
allow the successful candidate to work in a dynamic research team and in a multidisciplinary
and international scientific environment.

Candidates' profile
Ideal candidates should satisfy the following requirements:

  • A Master degree in a relevant area (such as philosophy, argumentation theory, or
    psychology), finished with top marks prior to appointment
  • High motivation for academic research
  • Ability to work independently and to plan and direct own work
  • An acquaintance with the practice of psychoanalysis will be highly considered
  • Fluency in French and/or German, as part of the research will require the analysis of the
    works of Jacques Lacan and Sigmund Freud
  • Motivation to engage in the elaboration of a PhD dissertation. Ability to work in team and
    autonomy in scheduling research steps. Interest for teaching and tutoring students and
    availability to collaborate with colleagues (engage in scientific dialogue, listen and think
    critically) are required.

Admission decisions are based on the candidate's background, interests, attitude and
potential for academic achievement. The successful candidate will collaborate on teaching
activities at USI, and will ideally start his/her collaboration and research activities in the
second half of 2024.

Workplace is USI Università della Svizzera italiana, located in Lugano, Switzerland.
