Duties and Responsibilities
The UN-REDD Programme, a joint initiative between the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), was established to bring together the UN system support for forests and climate.
As the Programme approaches the conclusion of its current phase in 2025, it is strategically positioned to transition towards its post-2025 phase with a renewed focus on addressing the ongoing challenges of deforestation, forest degradation, and climate change mitigation.
This transition process involves the drafting of a comprehensive post-2025 strategy, which will guide the Programme's activities for the next phase.
The strategy aims to build upon the achievements and lessons learned from the current phase, while also responding to evolving global priorities and commitments, such as those outlined in the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals with the end goal of developing a robust and operationally sound strategy document by the end of 2024.
The UN-REDD Programme is seeking to hire a consultant to facilitate the process leading to the formulation of the UN-REDD Programme's post-2025 strategy.
The consultant will be working collaboratively with a second consultant responsible for undertaking a formative review of the Programme to synthesize insights, engage with stakeholders, and draft a comprehensive strategy document for The process will take place in three consecutive steps:internal intelligence gathering, external consultations, and consolidation of the UN-REDD Programme post-2025 strategy. The consultant will report to Head of UN-REDD Programme Secretariat. Specific tasks and responsibilities
- To initiate the development of the post-2025 strategy document.
- To conduct internal UN-REDD intelligence gathering, collaborating closely with the lessons learned consultant to gather insights and experiences from Programme stakeholders.
- To facilitate the drafting of a preliminary strategy document (draft zero), outlining strategic priorities, objectives, and initiatives for the post-2025 phase based on internal intelligence gathered.
- To facilitate a first round of external structured consultations on draft zero of the strategy document, engaging with external partners, countries, potential donors, and other stakeholders to validate strategic priorities and gather additional inputs.
- To facilitate a second round of external consultations on draft 1 of the strategy document, gathering further feedback and insights to enhance the document's relevance and effectiveness for the post-2025 phase.
- To incorporate feedback from external consultations and stakeholders to refine and finalize the UN-REDD Programme Post-2025 strategy and finalize the strategy.
- An advanced-level university degree (master's degree or equivalent) in environmental science, forestry, climate change, international relations, or related fields is required.
- A minimum of 15 years of progressively responsible working experience in developing strategies, proposals, or action plans for international organizations or development agencies is required.
- Extensive knowledge and experience with forest and climate issues, including but not limited to the role the UN-REDD Programme plays within the broad "ecosystem" of climate and forest-related organizations, programmes, and initiatives is required
- Proven expertise in conducting stakeholder consultations and facilitating multi-stakeholder processes is desirable.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to synthesize complex information into actionable recommendations is desirable.
Special skills/knowledge:
Strong facilitation skills, and experience in developing strategies, proposals, or action plans for international organizations or development agencies is required.
Languages- English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this assignment, fluency in spoken and written English is required.
