Responsibilities:

To assist OHCHR with


1/ proof reading and editing of texts in Portuguese (Brazil), including written documents, annual reports, analysis, newsletters, press releases, briefings, factsheets, video and animation scripts, graphic headlines, social media copy, website copy.


  • Ensure that the text produced is technically, linguistically and grammatically correct, error free and meets high quality standards, without requiring further editing by OHCHR.
  • Ensure language meets OHCHR and United Nations editorial requirements, including, in the case of reports or other documents so designated by OHCHR, the United Nations Editorial Manual.
  • Ensure the use of appropriate terminology considering the style and nuances of the original text.
  • Ensuring quality check and control of all deliverables, prior to delivery to OHCHR.
  • Ensure the use of gender sensitive language, including use of genderneutral formulations, as appropriate and in consultation with OHCHR, and in line with UN guidelines on genderinclusive language.
  • Ability to produce translations and editing/proofreading on various document formats, including Word, PDF, XLIFF files, etc
2/ Professional and accurate translation from English into Portuguese (Brazil).

  • Ensure language meets OHCHR and United Nations editorial requirements, including, in the case of reports or other documents so designated by OHCHR, the United Nations Editorial Manual.
  • Use the appropriate terminology considering the style and nuances of the original text.


3/ Professional and accurate interpretation from Portuguese (Brazil) into Spanish (Latin America) and vice-versa, and Portuguese (Brazil) into English and vice-versa.

4/ Support OHCHR in developing a list of accurate and respectful terminologies and guidance for translators and editors.

  • Provide substantive feedback on the list of terminologies developed by OHCHR.
  • Research on social media lingo/abbreviations including hashtags.
Qualifications/special skills
First degree in translation, interpretation, social studies, literature or related fields
3 years of relevant experience

Experience in writing, editing and translating documents and terms and interpretation English-Portuguese (Brazil)-English and Spanish-Portuguese (Brazil)-Spanish with evolving public usage and definitions in Portuguese (Brazil).

Proven experience working with civil society, companies, academia or media outlets focusing on the rights of LGBTI people.
