Intern on surveillance of Legionella spp. in building plumbing

Legionella pneumophilia is an opportunistic bacterial pathogen and causative agent of both Pontiac Fever and Legionnaire's disease.

Concerningly, Legionnaire's disease incidence is rising, with a 35% increase in the number of cases in Switzerland between Legionnaire's disease is caused by inhalation of aerosolized Legionella spp., for example via showering and/or cooling towers for buildings with Legionella spp.

Dealing with Legionella in building plumbing is a multi-disciplinary challenge ranging from basic to applied research and involving stakeholders from academia, industry and government.


Within this context, Eawag and the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) are collaborating on a project seeking to identify environmental causes of clinical Legionella spp. infections. The work is in the context of a multisite collaboration with the Swiss Federal Government (BLV), the technical university of Lucerne (HSLU), and the cantonal laboratory of Zurich (KLZH), with further support from a global network of experts on Legionella spp., building plumbing, and health effects. The project is focused on quantifying and characterizing Legionella spp. in residential buildings amongst people in Switzerland diagnosed with legionellosis as compared to people who have not been diagnosed.

Specific foci of the project include: 1) development and deployment of sample collection of piped water systems in residences throughout Switzerland, 2) development and use of culture-based methods for Legionella spp. quantification in plumbing systems, and 3) development and use of biochemical and molecular Legionella spp. characterization methods.

Applications will be evaluated on a rolling basis. Desired start date is February or March 2023. Duration of the internship is between 4 and 6 months.
