Consultant - Communications and Advocacy

In close collaboration with EMG staff and member agencies, the consultant will develop policy papers, plan and organize interagency events and implement communications activities to achieve better publicity and outreach as per the EMG's workplan.

Responsibilities:
The Environment Management Group (EMG) is a United Nations (UN) system-wide coordination body on environment and human settlements established in 2001 pursuant to the General Assembly resolution 53/242.
The Group is supported by a secretariat provided by UN Environment Programme, located in Geneva, Switzerland.The EMG membership consists of the specialized agencies, programmes and organs of the United Nations including the secretariats of the Multilateral Environmental Agreements.
The EMG identifies issues on the international environmental agenda that warrant cooperation and finds ways of engaging its collective capacity in coherent management responses to those issues.
In accordance with its Terms of Reference the EMG works through Issue Management Groups, Consultative Processes and Task Teams.
The EMG secretariat is looking to hire a consultant for the development of policy and communication papers and the organization of events as part of the EMG's contribution to the implementation of the Rio Conventions, and to support the secretariat with communication matters.
- Develop a policy paper on synergies among the Rio Conventions
- Develop proposals on the EMG's contribution to the COPs of the Rio Conventions in 202
- Prepare communication materials for the EMG on the implementation of the UN Common Approach on Biodiversity
- Organize and moderate EMG events and dialogues on the Common Approach on Biodiversity.
- Review EMG policy papers for the 29th EMG Senior Officials Meeting
An advanced university degree in the area of politics, communications, journalism, or public relations.
Minimum seven years of work experience in communications, public information and/or knowledge management and in the area of environment, at least partly with the United Nations.
Languages
For the advertised post, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of any other working languages of the UN is an added advantage.
