The Research Group Dendrosciences utilizes tree rings to explore environmental influences on tree growth and to reconstruct historical environmental changes on various scales, from minutes to millennia and from cells to ecosystems worldwide.

Starting from 1 September 2024, a 3-year opportunity is available for a

PhD in Dendroclimatology 100% (f/m/d)

You will be involved in a project that delves into temperature disparities between hemispheres when comparing climate indicators and model simulations spanning the last thousand years.

  • Contribute to creating and analyzing innovative millennial tree-ring chronologies.
  • Investigate high-frequency temperature signals and extreme events in the tree-ring data.
  • Reconstruct temperature fluctuations throughout the past millennium, including significant climate periods.
  • Focus on data analysis, result publication, and project coordination.
  • Collaborate with a motivated international research team comprising industry experts.

This role is situated at WSL within the esteemed Dendrosciences group, recognized for its excellence in tree-ring studies, advanced facilities, and a vibrant international workspace.

Successful candidates will enroll in the Graduate School of Climate Sciences at the Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research, University of Bern.

Candidates should hold a Master's degree in climatology, physical geography, forest ecology, biology, or a related field and possess strong analytical and statistical aptitude, especially in dendroclimatology.

Proficiency in programming, handling extensive datasets, and familiarity with tree-ring techniques is advantageous.

Excellent command of written and spoken English, structured work approach, independent efficiency, teamwork, and communication skills are essential requirements.

Additionally, applicants must be physically fit for potential fieldwork in remote areas.
