The lnstitute of Geography and Sustainability (lGD) brings together over 100 members conducting research on major contemporary issues of sustainability.


Presentation:

The focus of this doctoral position will be on the democratisation of provisioning systems.

Provisioning systems have emerged as a key object of study and transformation for sustainability in recent years from the perspective of heterodox and political economy, since they mediate production and consumption, hence environmental impacts and satisfaction of human needs.


The goal of this PhD will be:

first, to map out alternatives in current provisioning systems (in key sectors such as housing, transportation, food and health, considering roles played by users, workers, community, state, financing); second, to propose principles for the democratisation of each as part of social-ecological transformation; third to model potential changes in social and ecological outcomes arising from the democratisation of provisioning systems.

The outcomes of the research will be used in policy framework development, dialogue with policy-makers and innovative post-growth modelling.


At IGD-UNIL, you will be working under the supervision of Prof Julia Steinberger, with support from senior project members, including those in Barcelona.

This is a unique opportunity to be at the heart of a first-of-its-kind project exploring postgrowth societies.

Your responsibilities:

  • Undertake a PhD in Environmental Studies.
  • Explore, analyse and model democratic alternatives in provisioning systems.
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues and partners of the REAL project in Barcelona and beyond.
  • Participate in project publications, research workshops, and other events.
  • Build the postgrowth research community; and contribute to the project's overall communication strategy.
  • Present your research at scientific conferences.
  • Publish results in international peerreviewed journals.

Your qualifications:

We are looking for someone with the following skills:

  • Master's degree in Heterodox Economics, Political Economics or Ecological Economics, or another Masters degree with strong skills in qualitative institutional analysis. Professional/ practice equivalences will be considered, but have to be clearly motivated in the cover letter.
  • Demonstrated skills in qualitative analysis of institutional organisations and relations a plus.
  • Experience in methods of Systems of Provision or the analysis of alternative business models a plus.
  • Teamwork and collaborative skills, selfmotivation and organisation.
  • Communication skills in academic and nonacademic settings a plus.
