This position leads on strengthening the public and internal profiles of the Director General by developing communications and media outputs targeted at external and internal audiences and ensuring high quality liaison with all IUCN constituents.

- Annual Communications plan for the Director General's office (DGO)

  • IUCN Statements issued in the name of the DG
  • DG Messages to IUCN's 1,400+ Member organisations (e.g. Biweekly DG Message in IUCN Digest);
  • News articles and interviews published in the name of the DG in journals, press, books or newsletters;
  • Forewords, quotes, and social media outputs in the name of the DG;
  • Short videos
  • Speeches delivered by the DG at public events (e.g. live webinar with 1million+ views);
  • Town hall meetings for 900+ Secretariat staff. This involves planning the agenda, setting up the technological logistics, guiding the speakers, and running the event on the day itself.
  • Assessing all incoming invitations addressed to the Director General that involve public representation (e.g. delivering speeches, media interviews, foreword/filming requests), and lead the coordination of DGO team in analysing incoming opportunities and preparing the content for each specific engagement.
  • Drafting of institutional and statutory reports.
  • Guide the DGO executive assistants on planning mission agendas.
  • Decide and arrange, with the support of colleagues in offices and units across the Secretariat, which bilateral meetings and events the DG should take part in, so as to advance IUCN's institutional priorities. This includes meetings with Heads of State, Ministers, UN agency heads, and other partners, as appropriate.
  • Guide colleagues in different units and offices on the material that is needed by the DG. This can include providing first drafts, setting timelines, and performing quality assurance on the final products.
  • Accompanying the DG on mission as appropriate ensuring that necessary support is provided.
  • Ensure followup actions are adhered to.
  • Drafting, editing, and finalising in collaboration with other units and offices policies/procedures/guidelines with a Secretariatwide impact.
  • Lead the organisation of strategic workshops for Regional Directors.
  • Lead the preparation and quality assurance of relevant internal reports (e.g. regional quarterly report).
The above job description contains the main duties and responsibilities for this position.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Education & experience
  • University degree in social sciences, literature, history, political science, international relations, economics, development or other related fields.
  • At least 5 years' experience in the field of nature conservation/environmental sustainability, with a proven track record in working under pressure, coordinating dynamic workflows and tight deadlines across multiple teams and geographies to deliver high quality outputs in a timely manner.
  • Competencies
  • Strong written and verbal English language skills is a must (at the level of a professional communications officer).
  • Knowledge of other IUCN languages (French and Spanish) is an advantage.
  • Impeccable writing, editing, grammatical, organisational and research skills.
  • Demonstrated experience working with teams diverse in gender, nationality and background to achieve business results, with a proven ability to handle politically and culturally sensitive issues.
  • Strong track record working in an international organisation with teams spread across geographical offices.
