A PhD position is available in the Laboratory for Prenatal Medicine in the Department of Obstetrics and Fetomaternal Medicine, Insel Hospital (Prof. Daniel Surbek, Prof. Andreina Schoeberlein) for a highly motivated and hard-working candidate interested in studying the role of glial cells in perinatal brain injury.
Project Background
We are investigating the mechanistic underpinnings of injury to the fetal and newborn brain. In continuation of our recent work to comprehend the molecular identity of reactive astrocytes post acute perinatal brain injury, this project aims to interpret astrocyte reactivity amidst chronic insult during gestation. With this knowledge, we anticipate leveraging astrocyte reactivity as both a therapeutic focus and diagnostic tool in pregnancies impacted by placental insufficiency.
PhD Position: Astrocyte reactivity as a therapeutic focus and diagnostic tool in perinatal brain injury (100%)
Your Responsibilities
- Planning, execution, and analysis of experiments researching single cell characterization of astrocyte reactivity in rodent models of placental insufficiency.
- Planning, execution, and analysis of experiments exploring the usage of astrocyte-derived extracellular vesicles as a diagnostic tool in intrauterine growth restriction (evaluation of astrocyte-derived EV protein content in rodent model, evaluation of astrocyte-derived EV protein content in human pregnancy blood samples).
- Preparing discoveries for display at local and international conferences.
- Publishing discoveries in peer-reviewed journals
Requirements
- University Master's Degree in Biomedical or Biological Sciences or equivalent.
- Proficiency with rodent models of disease is a fundamental component of this project. Though prior exposure to rodent handling and experimentation is not mandatory, readiness to conduct studies on mice and rats is necessary.
- Independence, inventiveness, perseverance, solid work ethic, team-player mentality, and self-directed issue resolution are crucial for success in this role.
We offer
- The candidate will work as part of an active fundamental research laboratory team under the guidance of Prof. Daniel Surbek and Prof. Andreina Schoeberlein. The team comprises two post-doctoral fellows, a senior PhD student, and a research associate.
- Laboratory meetings for data delivery and discussion are conducted twice a month. Journal Club meetings take place twice a month
- Review of data and feedback on outcomes and subsequent steps will be provided on a daily to weekly basis by the leading post-doctoral fellow.
