The Experimental Animal Center (EAC) is a structural unit which carries the responsibility for in vivo research of the University of Bern. The EAC is building upon excellence in its animal care program to achieve the best quality of research. The 3Rs, the culture of care and compliance to regulations are cornerstones of the EAC strategy. This is an interesting career opportunity to become a European Specialist in Laboratory Animal Medicine (Dipl. ECLAM) that provides three years of supervised training and experience on Labora-tory Animal Medicine and Science within the Swiss and Southern Germany Residency Program in Laboratory Animal Medicine. The post holder performs his/her duty under the direct supervision of the clinical veterinarians, the Head of EAC, who is a Dipl. ECLAM and other EBVS specialists (ECVAA, ECPV). This position will report to the Head of EAC.

Area of responsibility

The specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Veterinary care: Provide daily health care of rodents, GMO rodents, rabbits, non-human primates, fish and amphibians. Participate in veterinary facility rounds and on-call schedule. Apply preventive medicine programs including rodent sentinel, vendor surveillance and quarantine programs. Care for the veterinary pharmacy.
  • Animal Model Support: Support scientists to prepare animal models for rodent and non-rodent species (anaesthesia, analgesia and post-operative care, medication administration, ultrasound imaging).
  • GEMS services: support of the cryobiology unit, compile datasheets and perform distress monitoring. Plan and manage breeding of the housed colonies.
  • Animal Welfare and Regulatory Compliance: Prepare Standard Operating procedures and guidelines. Ensure regulatory compliance with internal guidelines, local and national regula-tions in close collaboration with the AWO. Help promote the welfare and quality of life of re-search animals.
  • Education: Participate to the internal training to researchers and animal care staff. Attend Seminars and Journal Club and further education

    Requirements

    • Degree in Veterinary Medicine and national license; one-year internship or equivalent expe-rience.
    • Previous expertise with non-human primates and fish/amphibian knowledge would be a plus
    • Fluent in English and German, comfortable French (written and oral)
    • Initiative, goal oriented and excellent interpersonal and communication skills
