The World Trade Organization (WTO) Internship Program offers valuable opportunities for postgraduate students from various countries to gain hands-on experience within the organization. This program aims to enhance diversity within the WTO while providing interns insights into global trade policies and operations.

By participating in the WTO Internship Program, candidates can gain valuable experience, contribute to the organization’s work, and enhance their understanding of global trade dynamics.

The WTO offers three internship programs:

  • WTO Internship Program: This program is open to postgraduate students from all WTO members and countries engaged in accession negotiations.
  • China LDC and Accessions Program (China WTO Accession Internship Programme): Reserved for postgraduate students from developing and least developed countries (LDCs)
  • WTO Support Program for Doctoral Studies: This is also reserved for postgraduate students from developing countries and LDCs.

These programs aim to enhance diversity within the WTO.

Benefits and Financial Aids

The following items are part of the WTO Internship:

WTO Internship Program:

  • Daily allowance: Interns receive CHF 60 per day, covering weekends and official holidays during the internship period.
  • Travel expenses: Not covered by the WTO for travel to and from Geneva.
  • Health insurance: Mandatory in Switzerland; interns must arrange their coverage before starting the internship.

China’s LDCs, Accessions, and General Internship Program:

  • Daily allowance of CHF 90 provided to interns, including weekends and official holidays.
  • The program covers travel expenses (economy class airfare) to and from Geneva.
  • An additional CHF 100 per month is provided to interns to subsidize health insurance premiums for the internship duration.
  • Interns responsible for organizing mandatory health insurance in Switzerland.

WTO Support Program for Doctoral Studies:

  • Daily allowance: CHF 60 provided, covering weekends and official holidays during the internship period.
  • Travel expenses: The WTO covers economy-class airfare to and from Geneva.
  • Health insurance: Mandatory in Switzerland; interns must arrange their own before starting the internship.
Eligibility Criteria

All applicants should meet the following criteria:

WTO Internship Program:

  • National of a WTO member state or a country engaged in accession negotiations.
  • Completion of undergraduate studies in a relevant discipline
  • At least one year of postgraduate studies completed
  • Age between 21 to 30 years old.
  • Specific eligibility criteria may vary for different programs.

China’s LDCs, Accessions, and General Internship Program:

  • National of a least-developed country (LDC) or developing WTO member or an observer engaged in accession negotiations
  • Completed undergraduate studies in a relevant discipline (e.g., economics, law, political science, international relations) and at least one year of postgraduate studies
  • Age limit: 30 years old or younger

WTO Support Program for Doctoral Studies:

  • National of a WTO member state or a country engaged in accession negotiations
  • National of a least-developed country (LDC) or a developing country
  • Undertaking a PhD or equivalent in economics, law, international relations, or a closely related WTO discipline
  • Must be in the final stage of PhD studies, at least 75% completion of the thesis
  • Proficiency in one of the three official languages of the WTO: English, French, or Spanish
