The Interdisciplinary Center for Gender Studies ICFG is an interfaculty competence centre at University of Bern that focuses on gender dimensions of social, sustainable and political-legal developments. The centre offers teaching and further education in gender studies, carries out inter- and transdisciplinary research at the interface of science and practice and works on a mandate basis for numerous non-university stakeholders.

Dr. Valentina Nerino is recruiting a Student Assistant to support her academic activities concerning gender and political communication at the Interdisciplinary Center for Gender Studies (IZFG). Specifically, these activities encompass the areas of Research and Grant Proposal Development. The Student Assistant will work alongside Dr. Nerino to develop and implement research activities within the context of the Horizon Europe Project “UNTWIST,” which aims to investigate the role of gender in the mobilization of far-right parties across Europe. In particular, these include the data collection, management and analysis of survey data as well as the development and coordination of outreach materials (Video, policy briefs, etc.) to political stakeholders in both Swiss civil society and party politics. Additionally, the role includes research inquiries about political persuasive communication on both social media and offline media, with a focus on gender issues in political narratives. Furthermore, the assistant will participate in the development of grant proposals both at the Swiss and European levels.

Tasks•Support the research activities of the Horizon EU project "UNTWIST," including data collection, analysis, and drafting project reports
•Create visual aids and facilitate outreach to political stakeholders with research findings
•Translation Tasks of policy outputs and website texts between German and English
•Compile a preliminary database of relevant campaigning events, speeches, and debates for the 2024 EU and US elections
•Assist in the analysis of digital and media data
•Gather administrative information for grant applications and assist in producing necessary documentation
•Collaborate closely with team colleagues at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Gender Studies (IZFG) and the Institute of Political Science (IPW)Requirements•Bachelor's Degree in Political Science, Gender Studies, or Sociology
•Being enrolled at a Swiss university during the whole duration of the position
•Background in quantitative methods
•Familiarity with database management in Excel, as well as experience with Microsoft Teams
•Experience in or interest in communication with stakeholders from different backgrounds (parties, civil society, media)
•Knowledge of or interest in the use of social media by right-wing populist parties, feminist theories and Swiss party politics is an advantage
•Interest in programming languages for data analysis, such as R and Python, as well as computational approaches to digital data analysis and/or experimental design is an advantage
•Ability to work collaboratively in a team, both within the university and in collaboration with other universities
•Willingness to contribute to the drafting of grant proposals for research activities
•Proficiency in English (English will be the working language) and German (both at least B2 level) is required (Knowledge of Swissgerman and Swiss political context is desirable) We offer•Gain experience in an international team through collaboration with research groups from six European countries as part of the Horizon Europe Project "UNTWIST"
